It was a long season for the New Orleans Saints with a lot of ups, downs, twists and turns, but we end the season with a 9-7 record and come 1 game away from being in the playoffs and winning the NFC South. The beginning of the season was an uneventful one as we rattled off three straight loses to the Vikings, Patriots and Panthers to begin the season. So at 0-3 we finally got out first win over the Dolphins in Week 4 to bring us to 1-3. We had an early bye week that may have killed whatever momentum we had after our first victory especially heading into a game against the NFC North leading Detroit Lions in a game where we showed promise up until a pick six thrown by Drew Brees to end the half that led to an abysmal 2nd half that led to us falling to Lions 38-7. Drew Brees would go down with a shoulder tear and would miss the next 4 weeks of the season and backup Ryan Fitzpatrick was named the starter in Drew's absence. Fitzpatrick led us into two straight NFC North match-ups against the Packers and Bears which were less than memorable. We ended up losing to the Packers 17-10 as Ryan Fitzpatrick missed a wide open Michael Thomas that would of led to a TD and potentially OT after the Extra Point. Then next week our run defense was almost non existent as we allowed Bears HB Jordan Howard to run 21 times for 163 yards and 4 TDs as we fell to the Bears 31-20. After Week 8, Drew Brees was set to still be out 2 more weeks and we decided that Ryan Fitzpatrick's time as the starting QB for the Saints was over and we went with Sophmore QB Aaron Murray in Week 9 against Buccaneers. At 1-6 heading into the game, we felt like we had nothing to lose and wanted to see what the young guy could do in a big time divisional match-up. This game was close from start to finish as Aaron Murray threw 16/27 for 207 yards 1 TD and 3 INTs, but the game came down to us being down 13-10 lining up for the Field Goal and the backup now Ryan Fitzpatrick running a beautiful Fake Field Goal and hitting LT Terron Armstead for 32 yards and the Win in regulation as we come up with a miraculous victory over the Bucs 17-13 in Week 9. The Saints finally recieved some good news that Drew Brees was cleared to play in our Week 10 match-up agianst the Buffalo Bills. This was probably the worst game the offense had played all season and you could see the rust on Drew Brees play dividends in us coming out on the losing end of this game 13-9 as the only TD all game on either side was a Kickoff Return TD for the Bills. So at the moment heading into Week 11 we were 2-7 and all hope seemed lost as we started looking towards the draft and expecting a high first round pick we also decided to let Rookie HB Alvin Kamara start the final 7 games of the season and it seemed to play a big part in our teams late season success. We welcomed the Redskins into New Orleans for Week 11 and we ended up winning 35-25 off a 237 yard 2 TD and 1 INT perfomance from Drew Brees and an 85 yard 1 TD performance from Alvin Kamara. We head into Week 12 last in the MBL in total INTs on the season with 9 and our defense came alive against the Rams snagging 6 INTs and returning 2 to the house for TDs. We continued to ride the momentum the defense gave us into a huge match-up against the division leading Carolina Panthers in New Orleans that we came out on top 27-14 in Week 13 as we move to 4-7 on the season. We then head to Atlanta where we are driven by our defense to a victory over the Falcons 20-10. We then welcomed the Jets to New Orleans where our defense stood their ground in the 2nd half and lead us to a 35-20 win. We played Atlanta for the 2nd time in 3 weeks and in this game the defense kept riding the wave of momentum and picked off Matt Ryan 5 times in leading us to a victory over the Falcons 28-14. Week 17 saw us at 8-7 and sadly out of the playoff picture after a Panthers victory over the Buccaneers in Week 16 to move them to 10-5 and we headed to Tampa Bay to take on the Bucs in a game that we really wanted to win to end the season on a high note and prove something to ourselves and that is exactly what we did as we defeated the Buccaneers 28-7 and end the season 9-7 off a 7 game win streak to end the season and give us a lot of confidence heading into MBL Season 27.
